The Art of Corten

Corten, also written COR-TEN, is a self-protecting weathering steel. Exposed to the seasons, it develops a stable oxidation patina that shields the metal from deep corrosion. Where ordinary rust consumes steel, the Corten patina defends it.

Its colour is not a coating; it is a history written by rain, air and light. Its name joins CORrosion resistance and TENsile strength. Dense and stable, the material can cross decades without paint or routine treatment.

Corten was developed in the United States in the 1930s for railway wagons that had to withstand weather without maintenance. Architects and sculptors soon embraced its raw depth. Monumental sculpture, museum façades and land art carried it from the railway to the gallery.

In its first weeks outdoors, orange-gold tones rise to the surface. They deepen through vivid rust, burnt sienna and dark amber until the metal reaches its celebrated velvety copper-brown.

The patina then settles into balance. It needs no paint and little intervention. Every season refines it; a Corten object is never static, but grows in character with time.

At CORTENYS, patina is never left entirely to chance. The House developed a signature Corten Patina, a workshop process that awakens and guides oxidation toward our deep, warm reference tones of rust, sienna and amber.

No two pieces are identical. Nuance, veining and the breathing texture of the material make each creation unique. For water and lightweight applications, we also create our signature Corten finish on aluminium, which is naturally corrosion-resistant.

Corten planters anchor planting; fountains and water bowls mirror the sky; fire bowls and fire tables gather people on summer evenings. Decorative panels, letterboxes and log stores define an entrance or give rhythm to a path.
