Cybèle

Corten steel planters with a bottom for patios, decks and terraces

Five shapes of planter box

Each Corten planter box with a bottom suits a different spot. Cybèle, a deep cube, anchors an entryway or hosts a Japanese maple, from 400 to 700 mm square (about 16 to 28 inches) in 1.5 mm and up to 1,400 mm (about 55 inches) in its 2 mm version. Déméter, a long rectangular box from 900 to 2,000 mm (about 35 to 79 inches), runs along a patio and turns ornamental grasses or bamboo into a living screen. Iris, an isosceles right triangle, fits a corner. Maïa splits a low box, 300 mm (about 12 inches) high, into evenly spaced compartments with one kind of plant per cell, while Thalie stands on four integrated legs.

1.5 mm or 2 mm: check the product page

Cortenys sets the sheet thickness model by model and lists it on every product page. At 1.5 mm (about 0.06 inch), Iris, Cybèle and the 1.5 mm Déméter have finer folds and a lighter weight, suited to standard sizes. At 2 mm (about 0.08 inch), Maïa, Thalie, Cybèle 2 mm and Déméter keep their faces flat even when damp soil pushes against the walls, making them the better choice for large Corten steel planters and trees. Déméter shows the difference: the 1.5 mm version stays at 300 or 400 mm wide (about 12 or 16 inches), while the 2 mm version reaches 600 mm wide and 1,000 mm high (about 24 and 39 inches).

On a patio or wood deck

Water should never pool in the bottom: under the soil, a drainage layer capped with geotextile fabric keeps wet earth from clinging to the steel, provided the excess can drain out. Thalie, which stands on four integrated legs, lets air move and water drain away underneath; for other models, discreet spacers leave the same air gap, which on a wood deck also keeps damp boards from holding water against the steel. Like any dark metal, Corten gets hot in direct sun, so line the inside walls with thick geotextile fabric to keep roots cool. For in-ground planting, look to our bottomless Rhéa and Gaïa planters; for accents along a walkway, our Corten steel pots; and for the full checklist, our guide to choosing a planter.

FAQ

How do two Iris planters fit together?

Place their longest sides together and the two triangular planters form a square. Each Iris is an isosceles right triangle, so one unit can also fill a terrace corner. Repeated units can make a line along a wall. Compare the available heights and side lengths on the product page before arranging the group.

Do Corten planters need to be rusted before use?

No. Each planter in this collection leaves the workshop with the Cortenys signature patina already applied and inspected, so there is nothing to speed up. Outdoors and unvarnished, its color goes on deepening with rain and sun, more slowly under dry skies. To keep the color as delivered, choose the optional protective varnish on the product page; it greatly reduces runoff without ruling it out, so protect light pavers with small feet or a drip tray.

Can a Corten planter box hold a tree?

Yes, if you choose a large model in 2 mm (about 0.08-inch) steel, whose walls absorb the push of mature roots without deforming. Cybèle 2 mm and Thalie both go up to 1,400 mm square and 1,000 mm high (about 55 and 39 inches). Where the ground allows, plant the tree in Rhéa, our bottomless planter, so its roots can reach open soil.

A natural patina

Weathering steel develops a warm patina that changes with exposure. Runoff may mark pale surfaces. A protective clear varnish is optional on selected models; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave rust run-off and stain pale floors and terraces.

Corten steel planters: frequently asked questions

What size of Corten steel planter should you choose?

Start with the plants: their growth at maturity sets the volume of soil required. Then check the weight of the planter once filled, the load capacity of the surface and the space to move around it.

Which sizes are available?

Each product page lists the available dimensions and options. Bespoke sizes require an assessment.

Can Corten steel stain paving?

Runoff can carry patina residue. Protect pale paving and check whether the model offers an optional protective varnish, which greatly reduces runoff without ruling it out.

How should I prepare for delivery?

Check the terms for your address, access routes and the handling equipment needed for your chosen piece.

Is Corten steel painted?

Cortenys keeps the natural patina of Corten steel. An optional protective clear varnish is available on selected pieces; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave run-off and stain floors and terraces, so we recommend protecting pale surfaces.
