Jet, overflow or cascade: finding the right Corten water feature

Three ways to keep water moving

Every Corten water feature in our collection keeps its water in motion, each in its own way. In Alban, a spring bubbles up at the centre of a Corten steel cube, veils the top and runs down the sides into a concealed reservoir; the range runs from a compact cube to large linear fountains with several jets. Elio is our overflow fountain: in a cylinder of 2 or 3 mm Corten steel, 500 to 1500 mm across, the water rises to the rim and spills over in a thin veil all the way round. Nereida, a two-tier cascade of 2200 × 1300 mm, fills its upper basin with a smooth sheet of water before stepping down to the lower one. Each is supplied with its submersible pump and integrated LED lighting, while water sliding down a vertical surface is the domain of our Corten steel water walls.

Where to place it

Choose a spot where you can see and hear your Corten garden fountain from the living room or from the part of the terrace you use in the evening, ideally in partial shade. Alban and Elio suit the heart of a courtyard or a bed of gravel, where they can be seen from every side, while Nereida reads best as a backdrop, against a wall or in front of a hedge. Once night falls, the LEDs light the jet of Alban and Elio, or the main fall of Nereida.

Base, socket and the right material

Filled with water, a Corten steel fountain is heavy, so it needs level, stable ground able to take the load: a slab, concrete or compacted gravel. For the pump and LEDs, plan a protected outdoor socket, installed by a qualified electrician. The protective varnish, offered on all three, strongly reduces rust marks on light paving, without ruling them out, and for a colour that stays fixed, Alban, Elio and Nereida also exist among our aluminium water features. The fountains arrive ready to install; setting them up on site is left to you or your contractor.

FAQ

What is an overflow fountain?

A fountain whose water rises to the rim and spills over its edge. In our Corten range, Elio is the round example: the water covers the top of the cylinder, reaches the rim, then slides down the whole circumference in a fine, even veil before returning to a hidden reservoir. Alban's square top overflows the same way, down its four sides; Nereida steps its water down in two tiers.

Why does the water level drop so fast?

Mostly through evaporation, which speeds up in full sun and in hot, windy weather. Check the level often and top it up with clean water, because the pump must never run dry; a spot in partial shade slows the loss. Keep chlorine and bleach out of the water altogether, since both attack the patina.

Will a fountain soften the noise of a street?

It helps: moving water covers the sound of traffic or of a neighbouring garden better than a hedge, as our installation guide points out. The bubbling jets of Alban and Elio stay discreet, while the two-level fall of Nereida sounds fuller and more enveloping.

A natural patina

Weathering steel develops a warm patina that changes with exposure. Runoff may mark pale surfaces. A protective clear varnish is optional on selected models; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave rust run-off and stain pale floors and terraces.

Corten steel water features: frequently asked questions

Does a Corten steel fountain use a closed-loop system?

Yes, the water circulates in a loop. In Elio and Alban, it rises, flows over the piece and falls back into a concealed reservoir, where the submersible pump sets it moving again; Nereida is supplied with its own closed-loop circuit.

Which sizes are available?

Each product page lists the available dimensions and options. Bespoke sizes require an assessment.

Can Corten steel stain paving?

Runoff can carry patina residue. Protect pale paving and check whether the model offers an optional protective varnish, which greatly reduces runoff without ruling it out.

How should I prepare for delivery?

Check the terms for your address, access routes and the handling equipment needed for your chosen piece.

Is Corten steel painted?

Cortenys keeps the natural patina of Corten steel. An optional protective clear varnish is available on selected pieces; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave run-off and stain floors and terraces, so we recommend protecting pale surfaces.
