Corten steel furniture: choosing by use

Planting and screening

Corten garden furniture is easiest to choose by the job it has to do, and the first job is often planting: a planter or a pot on a terrace, or a bottomless raised bed on open ground, where the roots can carry on into the soil. Thalie, in 2 mm Corten steel, square or rectangular up to 2000 mm long, stands on four built-in legs, so water drains away beneath it and the planting gains height. To shape the view, a pierced panel sets a boundary without closing the space; Aquilon, cut with circles, filters the view rather than blocking it. If it is to serve as a screen, have its anchoring and wind load checked by a professional.

Water and light

With water, the choice is between movement and stillness. Our water features Alban, Elio and Nereida send water up in a jet, over a rim or down a cascade, and water walls let it fall in a sheet; Ondine, a round 3 mm basin supplied without pump or lighting, holds a still reflection from 1000 to 2500 mm across. For light, the lights and lanterns range runs from flame lanterns that take a candle or a decorative fire to the Luminus LED bollard along a path and the Solan façade light. The wall lights, pendants and floor lamp designed for indoors come with the protective varnish, which greatly reduces rust transfer without ruling it out: beneath the floor lamp, a light floor is still best protected.

Fire, cooking and firewood

Every hearth burns the fuel stated on its product page: bioethanol for Nyx, Pyrros, Ignis and Pharos, wood for the other fire pits and fire bowls, fire tables and outdoor fireplaces. Héphaïstos, a square fire table in 3 mm steel, stays deliberately low at 280 mm so the flame sits in view of everyone seated around it; it is not designed for cooking. For that there is Vulcain, which surrounds a wood fire with a wide cooking ring and keeps logs in its open base. Your reserve of firewood belongs in a log store such as the open-fronted two-tier model, from 600 to 1500 mm long, where the logs can dry.

FAQ

Does the collection include a dining table and chairs?

Yes, for indoor use. The Orphée dining table sets a marble top on Corten steel bases, and the Eurydice cantilever chairs are designed to go with it; the Hestia armchair and the Dorian and Silas coffee tables complete our tables and seating. All are delivered with the protective varnish, which strongly reduces rust transfer to floors and walls without ruling it out.

Corten or aluminium outdoor furniture by the sea or a pool?

On the seafront, salt spray stops the patina from settling, so we steer you towards our powder-coated aluminium pieces, which do not rust. A little further inland, a varnished Corten piece, rinsed with fresh water now and then, may be suitable: we assess each setting case by case. Beside a pool, keep Corten out of the splash zone and choose the varnished finish where the model offers it: it greatly reduces run-off on pale coping, without ruling it out, so keep spacers or a drip tray beneath the piece.

How thick is the steel?

It varies from 1.5 to 3 mm, set model by model and stated on each product page. Planters of everyday volume such as Iris use 1.5 mm; large formats, bottomless planters and most log stores use 2 mm; pieces exposed to heat, such as the Hélios and Héphaïstos fire tables, use 3 mm.

Sizes and placement

Compare the footprint, height and weight listed on each product page. Leave room for use and maintenance. Bespoke dimensions need to be assessed before ordering.

A natural patina

Weathering steel develops a warm patina that changes with exposure. Runoff may mark pale surfaces. A protective clear varnish is optional on selected models; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave rust run-off and stain pale floors and terraces.

Corten steel furniture: frequently asked questions

Which sizes are available?

Each product page lists the available dimensions and options. Bespoke sizes require an assessment.

Can Corten steel stain paving?

Runoff can carry patina residue. Protect pale paving and check whether the model offers an optional protective varnish, which greatly reduces runoff without ruling it out.

How should I prepare for delivery?

Check the terms for your address, access routes and the handling equipment needed for your chosen piece.

Is Corten steel painted?

Cortenys keeps the natural patina of Corten steel. An optional protective clear varnish is available on selected pieces; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave run-off and stain floors and terraces, so we recommend protecting pale surfaces.
