Lyra pendant light in Corten steel, lit, above a travertine block against a black rock wall

Floor lamp, pendants and wall lights

Corten steel lights for indoors

The warmth of Corten steel, its patina of earth, amber and deep rust, comes into the house through light. We make five indoor pieces: one floor lamp, two pendant lights and two wall lights, each in three sizes.

Lyra

One floor lamp, two pendants, two wall lights: every size and UK price

Dimensions and weights come from the product pages, the weights being indicative. Prices are UK prices including the varnish, since these indoor models are only sold with it; the varnish cuts rust transfer sharply, but even varnished, a piece can still stain whatever it touches or hangs above, so keep a pale surface beneath it protected.

Lighting a dining table or kitchen island: Astra or Lyra

Over a round or square table, Astra, a polyhedron of folded facets, directs its glow down onto the tabletop. Hung alone it marks the centre of the table; in a pair or a cluster it forms a group over a larger one. Over a long dining table, a kitchen island or a breakfast bar, Lyra, a beam from 1200 to 1800 mm long hung on two cables, spreads an even light along the whole length.

Choose a Lyra clearly shorter than the tabletop, so the light falls on the table rather than on the chairs. Decide the drop before installation (ask us for the length of cable supplied): a common rule of thumb puts the bottom of the light 60 to 80 cm above the table, adjusted to the height of the people sitting there and to the view from one end of the room to the other.

Indoor lights

Our indoor lights in Corten steel

The price on each card is the lowest for that model, in its smallest format. All five pieces come with our protective varnish, included in the price; it sharply limits rust transfer but cannot exclude it, so a pale floor or wall may still pick up rust stains, and the surface beneath them should be protected.

A floor lamp and two wall lights for evening light

Sirius is a slim 80 × 60 mm bar that stands on the floor by itself, with no other support: its line of light runs the full height and spills into a pool of brightness at its base. It earns its place in the corner of a sitting room, beside a sofa or along a wall, where a conventional standard lamp with a shade would take up too much room.

Aura is a square frame for the wall: its light, hidden inside the frame, outlines a glowing square on the plaster, which suits a hallway, a landing or the wall above a sideboard. Eos is a tall, narrow plate cut through by a single line of light, from 400 to 900 mm high: one above a bed, one in a hall, or several in a row down a corridor.

Searching for a Corten table lamp? We do not make one. Beside a sofa or a reading chair, the shortest Sirius, 1200 mm tall, gives you low light without a side table; over a desk or a dining table, an Astra pendant brings the glow down to the tabletop.

  • Hallway: an Aura above the console table, or two Eos either side of a mirror.
  • Sitting room: Sirius in the corner, Astra over the coffee table or the dining table.
  • Kitchen: Lyra lengthways over the island.
  • Bedroom: a pair of 400 mm Eos either side of the bed.

Ceiling fixings, wiring and the electrical details

The pendants and wall lights fix to the ceiling or wall and connect to your electrical installation, so have them fitted by an electrician, who will check the ceiling or wall can carry the stated weight (up to about 12 kg for an 1800 mm Lyra) and that the connection complies. Our product pages do not list the light source, the wattage or the colour temperature: ask us for these before ordering if your lighting scheme needs them.

We make every light to order: allow 2 to 5 weeks as an indication, and delivery costs nothing. It reaches you ready for your electrician, as there is no on-site fitting by us. The steps are on our making and delivery page.

Indoor patina and protecting floorboards, stone and plaster

All five models arrive with the signature Cortenys patina, applied in our workshop and then sealed with the protective varnish, which is included in the price. Indoors, out of the rain, the patina changes far less than it does in the garden. The varnish greatly reduces rust transfer without ruling it out: even varnished, a Corten piece can still stain pale floorboards, stone or plaster, especially if it gets damp. Put felt pads or a thin plate under the base of Sirius, and never clean the Corten or the surfaces around it with a lot of water. For cleaning and stain removal, read caring for Corten and removing rust marks; what the coating can and cannot do is set out on our varnish page.

Inside or outside: which of our lights goes where

For the façade, the front door and the garden, Solan, Nérite and Angle Dièdre are made to go outside: they are compared with Aura and Eos on our Corten wall lights page. The flame lanterns and the Luminus LED bollard are brought together in our full range of Corten steel lights and lanterns. To go with these lights, our indoor tables and seating are on the Corten steel tables and seating page.

Frequently asked questions

Which Corten lights are made for use indoors?

Five models are designed for indoors: the Sirius floor lamp, the Astra and Lyra pendants, and the Aura and Eos wall lights. All come with the protective varnish, included in the price, which does not entirely stop Corten from staining a pale floor or wall, so protect the surface beneath the piece.

What is your most affordable indoor Corten light?

The Eos wall light at 120 × 30 × 400 mm, at £1,590. The smallest Aura costs £1,890 and the smallest Astra £2,090, while Lyra and Sirius both start at £2,490.

Do you make a Corten table lamp?

No, we have no table lamp in the range. For light at sofa or armchair level, choose the 1200 mm Sirius floor lamp; over a dining table or desk, an Astra or Lyra pendant.

How long should a Lyra be over a 2 m dining table?

Lyra 1200 or 1500 mm, shorter than the tabletop, so the light stays on the table. The 1800 mm version suits a table of around 2.4 m or more, or a long kitchen island.

Could the Sirius floor lamp mark wooden floorboards?

It can leave a rust stain, even varnished: the varnish greatly reduces rust transfer but does not rule it out, especially if the base gets wet when you clean. Protect the floor under the base with felt pads or a thin plate, and clean around it without soaking the floor.

Can several Astra pendants hang together?

Yes, Astra is designed to be combined, as a pair or a cluster over a table. Mixing the three sizes, roughly 350 to 550 mm tall, gives a livelier group than a row of identical pendants.

Who connects a Corten pendant light or wall light?

An electrician: they check the ceiling or wall can take the weight of the piece and make the connection. Ask us for the electrical data of the model before installation if they need it.

A particular project in mind?
