Choosing a Corten letterbox for the garden gate

What Limentis is made of

Limentis is our Corten letterbox: a column of 35 × 35 × 120 cm, weighing around 30 kg, designed to mark the entrance like a small monument seen from the road. Its front is a 2 mm Corten steel panel dressed in the Cortenys signature patina, applied in our workshop, and the frame behind it is anthracite powder-coated aluminium. The column takes post as well as small parcels: a practical post box for a house set back from the road or at the end of a long drive. Unlike a letter plate in the front door, this Corten letterbox stands at the entrance to the property, where the post arrives first. A Corten steel letterbox sits naturally beside timber, stone and planting, which our guide to Corten steel names as the material's classic partners.

Engraving, before it goes in the basket

Personalisation is included: the name and number of your house are engraved on the Corten steel panel to order. On the Limentis product page, fill in the Name and Number fields before adding the letterbox to your basket, then check the engraving preview. Take a moment over the spelling and the number: this is how callers will find you. The letterbox is then made to order, and its signature patina is brought to maturity in our workshop.

Preparing the installation

Limentis is delivered ready to install; Cortenys does not provide on-site installation. Settle on the position before it arrives, clear of the gate's swing and the path, then ask a professional to confirm the base and the fixing for a 120 cm column of around 30 kg. Make sure water drains away from the foot, as Corten steel needs to dry out between showers. Beside pale paving or limestone, a strip of gravel or a dark slab limits run-off marks during the first seasons; our guide to Corten steel care goes into detail.

FAQ

Does the patina keep changing?

Yes, gradually. Limentis leaves our workshop already patinated, so there is no grey or bright-orange raw stage to wait through. After that, each cycle of rain and drying deepens the tone a little further, and it matures faster in a rainy, maritime climate than in a sheltered spot under dry skies. The aluminium frame keeps its colour.

What care does a Corten letterbox need?

Remove leaves or debris that would hold moisture against the steel, and rinse with clean water when needed. Avoid wire brushes and abrasive, chlorinated or rust-removing products, and never use a pressure washer at close range. If gritting salt splashes the column in winter, rinse it off with clean water as soon as it thaws.

Will it suit a house by the sea?

Not on the seafront: direct sea spray stops the Corten patina from stabilising. There, choose Stèle, our powder-coated aluminium letterbox in the same 35 × 35 × 120 cm format, shown with our luxury aluminium outdoor furniture. Further back from the shore, Cortenys can assess your setting case by case.

A natural patina

Weathering steel develops a warm patina that changes with exposure. Runoff may mark pale surfaces. A protective clear varnish is optional on selected models; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave rust run-off and stain pale floors and terraces.

Corten steel letterboxes: frequently asked questions

Which sizes are available?

Each product page lists the available dimensions and options. Bespoke sizes require an assessment.

Can Corten steel stain paving?

Runoff can carry patina residue. Protect pale paving and check whether the model offers an optional protective varnish, which greatly reduces runoff without ruling it out.

How should I prepare for delivery?

Check the terms for your address, access routes and the handling equipment needed for your chosen piece.

Is Corten steel painted?

Cortenys keeps the natural patina of Corten steel. An optional protective clear varnish is available on selected pieces; even varnished, Corten steel can still leave run-off and stain floors and terraces, so we recommend protecting pale surfaces.
