Care
Our Corten steel pieces receive the Cortenys signature patina in the workshop, before delivery: they never reach you bare, left to weather at home. Indoors, a protective varnish is essential; even varnished, the steel can still mark a light or porous floor, so we recommend protecting it. For everything else, follow the care recommendations for your piece and its finish.

A Corten steel BBQ grill built around the fire
Fire in the center, cooking all around
Vulcain is the Corten steel BBQ grill from Maison Cortenys, designed as a hearth to gather around. A real wood fire burns at its center; around it, a wide steel cooking ring heats gently and works like a flat-top griddle, or plancha. The hottest zone sits next to the flames and the heat eases off toward the rim, so meat, fish and vegetables can cook side by side, each at its own pace. Grease drains through small holes back toward the fire, which keeps the ring easier to clean. If you have been weighing a fire pit against a grill for your backyard, this is the idea: both in a single piece of Corten steel.
Size, setup and accessories
Vulcain comes in one size, 900 x 1070 mm (about 35 x 42 inches), and weighs 75 kg (about 165 lb). Set it on a stable, level, non-combustible surface such as stone, pavers or gravel, away from anything sensitive to heat, and leave room to move all the way around the ring. Below the ring, the open base holds your next logs. Two accessories are ordered separately: a cooking grate, if you want a classic grill surface over the fire, and a protective lid. Wood, kindling and charcoal are not included. Your grill arrives ready to install; we do not provide on-site installation.
Patina and care
Vulcain arrives already dressed in the Cortenys signature patina, applied in our workshop, so it never reaches you as bare gray steel and skips most of the bright orange stage of raw weathering steel. Around the fire, heat gently shifts the color of the patina, a living trace of evenings outdoors. Like any Corten steel piece, it needs to dry out between rains: clear damp ash from the hearth once everything has cooled, avoid standing water and protect light-colored pavers from runoff, for example with a bed of gravel. Designed in France and made to order in Europe, Vulcain comes with a two-year guarantee.
FAQ
Can you cook directly on Corten steel?
Not on the patina itself: Corten is a structural steel, not a steel designed for food contact. On Vulcain, you cook on the cooking ring, which is designed for it, or on the optional grate.
What fuel does Vulcain use?
Vulcain is designed for wood-fired cooking, as its technical sheet states, with a real wood fire burning at its center. Wood, kindling and charcoal are not included.
Are the grate and lid included?
No. The cooking grate and the protective lid are separate accessories, ordered on their own.

The flame dances at the heart of the piece, while the open base keeps logs in reserve, within easy reach.

Heat radiates from the center outward and creates several cooking zones, intense near the flames and gentler toward the rim: you can grill, sear, roast or pan-fry, all at once. Small drainage holes let the fat run off toward the fire, for easier cleaning. Finished in the workshop with the Cortenys signature patina, in tones of earth, amber and deep rust, this Corten steel BBQ shows a raw, warm character that deepens over time. Two accessories complete it – a cooking grate and a protective lid – which are not supplied with the BBQ and are ordered separately.
