Protective varnish for Corten steel

The patina of Corten steel, held at its finest moment. A single varnish, formulated for our tones and applied in the workshop: the signature patina stays exactly as you chose it, outdoors and indoors alike. It greatly reduces rust run-off without ruling it out, so we still recommend protecting the floor.

What it is

Corten varnish: protection that respects the material

The Cortenys protective varnish is a clear, colourless protective coat, applied by hand in the workshop over the signature patina once it has reached maturity.

It seals the oxidation and fixes the patina of Corten steel in the state you choose: the rust, sienna and amber tones stabilise instead of continuing to evolve.

The House uses a single varnish, the one that respects the material and preserves the natural depth of Corten. A deliberate choice: rather than an all-purpose product, a formula developed for its own tones.

For Corten steel indoors, the question does not arise: at Cortenys, the protective varnish is mandatory. It strongly reduces rust transfer but does not rule it out: even varnished, Corten steel can still mark a light or porous floor. We recommend protecting the floor: felt pads, small feet or a saucer, and no direct contact with light surfaces.

What changes

Protection for Corten steel, indoors and out

01

The patina is fixed

The tones stabilise: your Corten steel piece keeps the look chosen in the workshop.

02

A light satin finish

The varnish enhances the depth of the tones and gives them a slightly satin, denser finish: the patina takes on the presence of a noble material.

03

Fewer marks on the ground

Rain runs off a sealed patina: oxide streaks on terraces, stone or tiles are greatly reduced, though not ruled out. We recommend raising the piece on small feet or spacers, or using a drip tray.

04

Simpler care

The sealed surface simply needs a wipe with a damp sponge; the floor beneath it, however, is still best protected.

The finish in motion

Observing the varnished surface

The video shows the stabilised patina on a sample of Corten steel: a tone held in place, denser, with a discreet satin sheen.

The patina, held still

The varnish does not replace the material. It fixes the state chosen in the workshop and lets the rust, sienna and amber nuances of the Cortenys signature patina show through.

With or without

Raw or varnished Corten: two philosophies

Outdoors, the choice is yours. Left raw, meaning delivered with its signature patina but without varnish, Corten steel keeps on living: its patina darkens and grows richer through the seasons. This is Corten at its most honest.

01

Without varnish

The material continues its natural evolution. The nuances shift, darken and tell the story of the local climate. A choice reserved for outdoor use.

02

With varnish

You stabilise the tone you choose, on a surface that is easier to clean, with run-off greatly reduced but not ruled out. It is also the finish required for every piece installed indoors.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding Corten varnish

01Does Corten steel need to be varnished indoors?

Yes. At Cortenys, the protective varnish is mandatory for every Corten steel piece installed indoors. It fixes the patina and strongly reduces rust transfer, but does not rule it out: even varnished, Corten steel can still mark a light or porous floor. We recommend protecting the floor: felt pads, small feet or a saucer, and no direct contact with light or porous surfaces.

02Does the varnish change the colour of the Corten patina?

No. It is colourless and does not alter the tones: it deepens them slightly and adds a discreet satin sheen, like wet stone that has kept its glow.

03Does varnish stop Corten steel from staining?

It greatly reduces it, but does not rule it out. Once the patina is sealed, rainwater picks up far less oxide, yet even varnished, Corten steel can still release run-off and stain floors and terraces, especially light or porous ones: coping stones, pool decks, pale paving. We recommend protecting the floor before installation: small feet or spacers, or a drip tray, no direct contact with light surfaces, and wiping away any run-off promptly. This is where the House recommends it first and foremost, alongside these precautions.

04Can the varnish be added later?

The varnish is applied in the workshop, on a patina we bring to maturity before sealing it. The choice is made when you order. For a piece that is already installed, contact the House: we review every request.

05Does the varnish hold up outdoors, in full sun and rain?

Yes. It is formulated for outdoor use, in sun and rain, and protects the patina season after season. It does not replace floor protection, though: even varnished, Corten steel can still mark light or porous paving, so keep small feet, spacers or a drip tray beneath the piece.

The patina you choose, stabilised in the workshop.

A single varnish, formulated for the Cortenys signature patina and applied in the workshop at the right moment. An invisible finish, and often the very point at which Corten steel becomes an exceptional piece.
